”You’re my heartbeat, Brady.”
I love sci-fi. I love romance. I love that Lisa Henry gave me a perfect combination of both in this book.

The setting is near-future, post-apocalyptic earth orbit. I found this a really great setting for m/m romance. The rules haven’t changed much from what we know now, in fact it just makes it all that much more intense.

Was it weird that I was starting to enjoy the little spikes of lust that thrilled through him when we touched? That thrilled through us?
THE BLURB: Genre: Science Fiction & Space Opera, LGBT
Brady Garrett needs to go home. He’s a conscripted recruit on Defender Three, one of a network of stations designed to protect the Earth from alien attack. He's also angry, homesick, and afraid. If he doesn’t get home he’ll lose his family, but there’s no way back except in a body bag.

Cameron Rushton needs a heartbeat. Four years ago Cam was taken by the Faceless — the alien race that almost destroyed Earth. Now he’s back, and when the doctors make a mess of getting him out of stasis, Brady becomes his temporary human pacemaker. Except they’re sharing more than a heartbeat: they’re sharing thoughts, memories, and some very vivid dreams.

Not that Brady’s got time to worry about his growing attraction to another guy, especially the one guy in the universe who can read his mind. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just biochemistry and electrical impulses. It doesn’t change the truth: Brady’s alone in the universe.

Now the Faceless are coming and there’s nothing anyone can do. You can’t stop your nightmares. Cam says everyone will live, but Cam’s probably a traitor and a liar like the military thinks. But that’s okay. Guys like Brady don’t expect happy endings.

Note: This book contains reference to past rape, violence

Brady Garrett - Pissy, afraid, young, lowly recruit and probably smarter than all the officers combined.
It turns out that you can feel so fucking miserable that even the thought of asphyxiation doesn’t seem so bad.
Lt. Cameron Rushton - He’s a hero. His posters prove it. His good looks say, Join the Military and Save the Earth. Bullshit.
They probably just couldn’t fit Join the Military and Become Fucking Cannon Fodder for Aliens on the posters.
Maybe his return wasn’t a miracle after all. Maybe it was a harbinger.
In the near future we are in an unwinnable war against the Faceless, an enemy entirely superior, who may return at any time. We defend earth with orbiting space stations and Hawk pilots who patrol hoping to never encounter a Faceless. One of these pilots has been captured by the Faceless, rather than just being killed. He’s been gone for four years.

Conscripted at sixteen, Brady Garrett serves aboard Defender Three, a floating tin in the big black. Brady hates serving, hates the Faceless and hates that he can’t be home on earth where he belongs. When Faceless technology causes Brady and Cameron to connect they have to learn to understand one another. Cameron brings a message, but will anyone listen?

Lisa Henry had me heavy or weightless, hurried and hopeless at her whim. There was a scene in the book where I was leaning forward while virtually running down a corridor with a character. I couldn’t go fast enough to save him. When the scene was over I sat back and realized, whew, that was intense. I was actually breathing hard. When I get physically involved in a scene, in fact in the whole book, I know it’s good. What a great ride. Oh, I didn't even mention yet how damn sexy this was...
My lips found that place on his jaw that made his head fall back. I liked it when he exposed his throat like that. There was something primeval about that that spoke of trust and, on some level, surrender.
