When you physically experience an apocalyptic, mind-tilt from reading a book -- that's EXCEPTIONAL!

This book is:

A Head Rush
A Heartache
A Challenge
A Journey
A Love Story
An Introspective
and
A Privlege to Read

I am completely drained and completely fulfilled.

I am drained and exhausted, but in the kind of way that makes you know the effort was very worthy.

THE BLURB: While attending a 20th high school reunion in Alabama, Blain Harrington loses the love of his life in the blink of an eye. He soon realizes that everything is not always as it seems as he sets out on a journey for answers.

What do you do when the world you thought you knew crumbles around you? How do you piece it back together?
 THE CHARACTERS

Professor Blain Harrington - I miss my husband. But I also miss myself.

Manny - Manny was my family and he was missing.

The extended characters create the vivid fabric that more than supports this story. Strong friends, terrible bigots and sexy yet flawed lovers are just a few of the well developed personae completing this experience.

THE STORY

Here's where this review will be lacking, but not because the story lacks for anything. Instead, I just can't tell you what the story is about without saying too much. I will say that this is a full, rich journey with a realistic ending.

The author could have easily veered off into personal postulation. At times my mind was screaming to be shown the answers, asking to be driven through the "no man's land" safely. Like a good storyteller though, Drake Braxton let me find my way. I hesitate to use the word enlightened, but there is certainly a sense of that at the end, adding an additional element of merit to this read.

THE WRITING

The genius of the writing is even more obvious as I look back at the beginning of the book to write this review. It's a "chicken or the egg" scenario. Which came first Mr. Braxton? The beginning couldn't possibly have been crafted before the ending was formed, could it?

A complicated, complex and involved journey that is a must read. It's just an incredible accomplishment and a privilege to read.

RECOMMENDATION: Exceptional, Must Read.

Too Stupid to Live by Anne Tenino 4 of 5 Stars

Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia, #1)Too Stupid to Live by Anne Tenino
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

eBook ISBN:  978-1-937551-84-1
eBook release: Jan 14 2013
eBook formats:  pdf, mobi, html, epub
Print ISBN: Jan 14 2013
Word count: 80,500 Page count: 315
Type: Part of a Series
Cover by: L.C. Chase

The Blurb: It isn't true love until someone gets hurt.

Sam’s a new man. Yes, he’s still too tall, too skinny, too dorky, too gay, and has that unfortunate addiction to romance novels, but he’s wised up. His One True Love is certainly still out there, but he knows now that real life is nothing like fiction. He’s cultivated the necessary fortitude to say “no” to the next Mr. Wrong, no matter how hot, exciting, and/or erotic-novel-worthy he may be.

Until he meets Ian.

Ian’s a new man. He’s pain-free, has escaped the job he hated and the family who stifled him, and is now—possibly—ready to dip his toe into the sea of relationships. He’s going to be cautious, though, maybe start with someone who knows the score and isn’t looking for anything too complicated. Someone with experience and simple needs that largely revolve around the bedroom.

Until he meets Sam.

Sam’s convinced that Ian is no one’s Mr. Right. Ian’s sure that Sam isn’t his type. They can’t both be wrong . . . can they?

~~~
If I told you that Sam is adorable and Ian is hot that wouldn't begin to describe these two MC's. Sam is intelligent, insecure, ridiculously introspective and brave. Ian is huge, built, gorgeous and confused.
I don't know who's head I enjoyed being inside of more; Sam is funnier, but Ian is so messed up about Sam. It's  just a wonderful thing to see. I don't want to spoiler anyone, but there is something about watching a big, hunky, hunk of perfection brought to his knees by someone...unexpected.
THE CHARACTERS
What guy wanted to be called cute? Sam, apparently.
Sam - Sam was a dorky, skinny, pale, unmuscled kid who'd tried to hit on a guy so far out of his league that Ian couldn't see Sam due to the curvature of the Earth.
"Like what you see, Sam"?
Ian - Oh! My Highlander's been wounded. A scarred man, looking for the one person who can help his heart heal.
THE STORY
Sam is a dreamer living in "Romancelandia", his go to place in his vivid imagination. (He's my kind of guy). The inside of his head makes this book a delight. When he and Ian first meet, it's purely an awkward accident. Yet, Sam romanticizes it. He realizes he'll never get another chance at "more" with his perfect Highlander, so he takes a chance and asks Ian for a date. Unfortunately, it doesn't develop the same way as his fantasy version.
So far from "his type", Ian can't really even see Sam. However, he also can't seem to get Sam out of his head.
Sometimes it really grates at me that sex fixes everything, but in this book it just works. Besides, they do get to the "important" stuff too, eventually.
THE WRITING
The fresh humor, tender moments and adorable fantasy reveries are a delight. For me, there was enough weight added in parts of the "reality" dialog to balance the silliness. In other words, this could have been too sweet, but instead it was rich and comforting.
There is a bit of formulaic predictability, escalating to a hospital scene, but honestly, I wanted it. All of my awww's and ooooh's were genuine.
2.5 Stars with potential
The concept for this book had "me" written all over it: Cold, callus assassin meets lively actor who awakens something long thought dead.
This book just misses by being uncomfortable and awkward.
Book Description/Review Below:
Ardan Boyle has spent the majority of his life as a freelance assassin. Working throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East, he only accepts contracts for the most vile of criminals, for those who have made themselves 'above the law'. His success can be measured in the reduction of criminal filth in the Old World but even this service to the world has a price: the total detachment from his humanity.
Enter Brad Myles, an aspiring actor and businessman. Their chance meeting at an airport awakens something Ardan thought long dead and even as they become acquainted, it becomes obvious that maybe there's a cure for a lifetime of apathy. Nothing comes for free though and while Ardan may be on the road to recovery, his past is not quite so easily shed.
THE CHARACTERS
Ardan Boyle - Professional assassin, arrogant, apathetic and calculating.
Brad Myles - This is where it falls apart for me. Brad is supposed to be fresh, lively, warm and real, but I just didn't feel him.
Brad could have benefited from a POV, while Ardan could have been a bit more broken. I suppose the author was trying to portray Ardan as emotionless, but even that just didn't come through.
THE WRITING
My head felt like a wet towel was wrapped around it and it kept getting tighter and tighter.
The action scenes are well done, engrossing and visual, but it's the intimate relationship bits that fall far short. The interaction between Ardan and Brad is awkward and uninspired. If this was strictly an action novella I think it would work and I would continue on with the series. At times it almost felt like two different people were writing; one style being accomplished, the other quite amateurish.
Finally a couple of pretty big jumps in both time and assumption were just too much to ignore. Again, I did enjoy the action aspect, but that wasn't enough for me to up my rating to three stars.
I sincerely thank the author and Netgalley.com for providing me with ARC of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Probably 3.7 stars, but I'll go 4 for enjoyability.
  • Super Fun
  • Super Quick
  • Super British Boy Sexy!
Book Description/Review Below:
Injured pole dancer Matt Lovell meets attractive radiographer Sal when he’s in casualty for an x-ray. Trouble is, Matt’s firefighter outfit is pretty convincing, and the longer he keeps up the pretence the harder it will be to reveal the naked truth: that there’s nothing underneath his costume but a sequinned thong!
THE CHARACTERS
Matt Lovell - The fresh, cute, sexy pole dancer.
Sal Mendoza-Jaquez - The hospital radiographer with a dark smile and a warm heart.
THE STORY
Matt is injured while sliding down the pole, so when he tells Sal how it happens it's easy to suggest it was while on the job...as a firefighter. He is wearing the costume, after-all.
Soon though, Matt wants to tell the truth because he wants to start out on the right foot with Sal. Plus, that sequin thong is giving him a rash, maybe it's messing with his conscience.
THE WRITING
The author's style is quick, fresh, light and enjoyable. I was pleased with the pace and found the my questions answered. It's a pretty quick jump into the sack, but that's not a problem in a story that's this much fun.
I do kind of wish poor Matt had some medicinal pain relief, but maybe that's an all too American trait. I just kept thinking about his pain. Luckily for Matt, Sal seemed to know just what to do.
PURE "ENTERTAINMENT"
Book Description/Review Below:
Currently free at Smashwords Words: 78053 (approx)
A single kiss could change both their lives forever, but it’s not his kiss to take…
Dr. Evan Harrison has become a recluse, a prisoner inside his own house, felled in his prime by a migraine headache without end. All he'd ever wanted was to be a doctor, and now he's nothing - until chance delivers a beaten and battered Jamie into his care. Fourteen years his junior, gorgeous, mouthy, stubborn and...completely and unquestionably straight. Maybe. Or maybe not...
Jamie doesn't know what hit him, other than there were three of them, and that he's broken and in pain and he doesn't know the identity of the kind stranger with the cold stethoscope and warm eyes taking care of him. And he sure as hell doesn't know why he likes his bossiness or finds him sexy....
Chance may have brought them together, but a shared attraction keeps them together long after Jamie’s bruises have faded. As Evan enjoys the longest pain-free stretch he’s known in two years, they begin to explore their attraction, the caresses of a kind Jamie’s never known. But even as Evan revels in his young lover’s first, tentative touches, the guilt is never far from his mind. Jamie’s never looked at another man romantically and Evan’s never looked at anything but. And Jamie won’t kiss him. That would be… gay.
Evan wants Jamie’s kiss more than he’s ever wanted anything before in his life, but it’s not his kiss to take, its Jamie’s to give. Evan knows wanting Jamie is wrong, their relationship unethical, a relationship forbidden with just cause. He swore an oath to do no harm. And it’s not only his oaths that are going to get broken--he’s never given his heart away before.
~~~

Nearly 300 pages of sex, sex, sex and more sex and, surprisingly enough, there was still a story written in there.

I understand this was written for a writing challenge, but I have to wonder if the challenge was to come up with as many clever sayings as you could in one book. There are just too many to choose from, but I have to share a few of my favorite nick-names Jaime has for Evan:

Dr. Depravity, Dr. Ain't-Puttin'-Out, Dr. Beyond-Bent, Dr. Bossy-as-Fuck, Dr. Oh-So-Proper-I-Iron-My-Jeans

THE CHARACTERS

Dr. Evan Harrison - Kind eyes. Soul of the devil. Evan finds comfort and more when he helps Jamie recover after a disturbing attack.

Jamie (James) - God, the boy was all legs and prickles. Twink-like Jamie is full of self doubt. His one liners are surprising and I started looking forward to what would come next.

THE STORY

Evan brings Jamie to his penthouse to help him heal. Jamie has survived his attackers, but he doesn't trust Evan at all. This strange story of "alternative medicine" has an interesting progression of quirks. There's just a little heartbreak and longing mixed with tons of sex and kinks.

THE WRITING

I found Finn Marlow's writing better than I expected. Knowing ahead of time that this was a writing challenge I guess I didn't expect much. Instead, I liked the characters, was surprised at the detailed descriptions and enjoyed the humor.

4.5 Surprising Stars

Historical MM romance set during World War I.

Book Description/Review Below:

Lieutenant Tom Donald envies everything about fellow officer Frank Foden—his confidence, his easy manner with the men in the trenches, the affectionate letters from his wife. Frank shares these letters happily, drawing Tom into a vicarious friendship with a woman he's never met. Although the bonds of friendship forged under fire are strong, Tom can't be so open with Frank—he's attracted to men and could never confess that to anyone.

When Frank is killed in no-man's-land, he leaves behind a mysterious request for Tom: to deliver a sealed letter to a man named Palmer. Tom undertakes the commission while on leave—and discovers that almost everything he thought he knew about Frank is a lie…

Full of surprises, mysteries, history and colloquialisms.

description

I'd been smitten, knocked off my feet as surely as if I'd got a Blighty one and, this time, there was a chance he'd reciprocate.

THE CHARACTERS

Captain Tom Donald - Brave on the battlefied, but not as sure in his personal life. Tom Donald realizes time is fleeting.

Frank Foden - Honest, steadfast. He and Tom are perfectly paired to fight battles and more.

Veronica - Frank's wife, a doctor, is extraordinary.

THE STORY

Strong bonds are formed between comrades. Living vicariously through happiness of others is one way to lift the oppression of war.

Despite the bleak nature of trench warfare during The Great War, 1914-1918, I found this to be a true love story. The atrocious conditions that surrounding this story do not smother it. Instead, it's the constant knowledge that life is precious and moments are fleeting that drives this story forward.

Letters from home hold whispers of truth. I kept going back to the letters even before I finished my first read. Then after my second read, the letters brought new light to the story.

"I've enjoyed your letters so much,"...

"You've stolen my very words,"...

description
It's easy to imagine the impact letters from the homeland would carry.

THE WRITING

Fifteen pages in and I had tears in my eyes. It surprised me to find that I could connect to these characters so quickly in this novelette.

Some could argue that the romance develops too quickly, but I don't see it that way at all. You have to consider the passage of time during warfare.

Early colloquialisms may put some off, but just read through; it really sets the time frame perfectly.

I find myself simultaneously wanting to analyze bits and pieces, but also, to let it stand. I think this would be a great little discussion generator.

MM sex is only alluded to (off screen), but in a lovely way this carries the tone and dignity of the story toward a sexual relationship.

[I just finished it, again, and I can recommend it whole-heartedly. Emotional, but no real angst, still moving and lovely. This would be an excellent entry point into MM romance.]

5 Amazing Stars

Book Description/Review Below:

When his father dies, Thomas is forced to abandon a burgeoning art career in New York. As difficult as it was to give up his lifelong dream, it's nothing next to walking away from the man he loves. Marcus taught him to embrace who he is, a sexual submissive who responds to the touch of only one Master. But why would the sophisticated Marcus need some farm kid from the South?

Then Marcus shows up and offers him a way to continue his art career and help his family. There's only one hitch-he asks Thomas to spend a week with him in the Berkshires. Thomas knows he should refuse. But he's never been able to say no to his Master.

Two slaves to Fate, awaiting its lash.

THIS, this is what I'm looking for; to be grabbed and taken. Take me on a journey, show me things, change my mind, drive me to my knees and pull me back up. I want this experience when I read.

Rough Canvas is a torrent of emotions and want and need and desperation, brutality and passion. Every one of those reactions are stirred up in the reader and explored deeply by the characters. I had no chance here; no chance to hold back and critically view this work. Instead I was pulled in completely and overwhelmed with the intensity of these two main characters and the absolute stunning quality of the writing and the beautiful journey that this story took me on.

I am so grateful that I was recommended this book by deirdre and then harassed :) into finally getting to it by so many others. I can't say thank you enough.

"Art is that which touches us down to the soul, tells us what life's about."

THE STORY

I guess you could say that you're placed right in the middle of this love story. It has a past, present and future and you are exposed to both. This gorgeous romance explores the relationship of two men who can't seem to have what they want or need. Submitting himself to Marcus' Dominance may completely destroy Thomas, but only because he knows when he ultimately has to leave he will be leaving his soul behind.
And the power of a submissive's trust could blow away anything a Master had to offer.
Marcus has this one week to convince Thomas that he belongs to Marcus body and soul. But Marcus hides a dark past from Thomas. It's fascinating watching him learn to expose himself, to trust.

THE CHARACTERS

The best thing about this book is the quality of the characters. Ms. Hill's knowledge of her characters is astounding throughout the book. They remained true to the original impression even while growing and evolving.

Marcus Stanton- An art gallery owner.

"You see into the souls of others more easily. It should make me want to close all doors against you, because my soul is the last thing I want anyone to see."

Thomas Wilder- A gifted erotic artist.

The click of the cuffs locking had been an answer to a question in his soul he'd never been brave enough to hear, let alone ask.

THE WRITING

When an accomplished dancer grabs you, holds you tight and leads you across the floor, they take you where they want you to go. You have no choice but to follow, overwhelmed with the sweeping movement and solid confidence that allows you to just enjoy the experience. That is exactly the kind of control this author has with her words. She steered me the way she wanted me to go. Giving me the confidence to just let go and be absorbed into the story. What a wonderful experience that is.

His skin was brown from the Southern sun, the muscles on the rawboned physique nevertheless rolling beneath it like the powerful curve of a waterfall at the break point.

Joey Hill's astonishing application of word arrangement and usage is a pleasure to read. She was able to illicit the intended result without breaking stride. She gripped me with intense emotional internal dialog. She made the characters memories so vivid it just drove home how deep their emotional connection was. And most of all, she had me completely in love with both protagonists.

Honestly, if I wanted to I could point out a few missteps, but I don't want to. There really wasn't anything that didn't work for me here.

  • 4 Strong Stars -

    Book Description/Review Below:

    For five years, Zach Tyler, son of one of the worlds richest software moguls, was held hostage, tortured, and abused. When he is rescued at last from the Venezuelan jungle, he is physically and psychologically shattered, but he slowly begins to rebuild the life he should have had before an innocent kiss sent him into hell. His childhood best friend David has lived those years with overwhelming guilt and grief. Every relationship David has tried has fallen apart because of his feelings for a boy he thought dead. When Zach is rescued, David is overjoyed and then crushed when Zach shuts him out. Two years later, David returns home, and he and Zach must come to terms with the rift between them, what they feel for each other, and what their future could hold. But Zach has secrets, and one of them might well destroy their fragile love.

    Powerful. This book gives us a hard, deep look behind the effects of utterly inhuman treatment and how, for Zach Tyler, he even begins to find himself again.

    Hatred, anger, torture, inhumanity, shame, a beaten and defeated spirit how can a human be whole again? Through love, tough love, friendship, devotion, sex, tenderness, honesty and patience. It's all in this one book, an amazing journey that may not be for everyone. I very much recommend this read, if you can stomach some of the graphic nature of the story. It is very worthwhile.

    THE CHARACTERS

    Zach - "I'm fucked up,..."

    Zach Tyler - At 15, Zach is fresh, open, inquisitive and highly intelligent. Five years later, he is damaged, defective, and inhuman. When he begins acting angry, belligerent and caustic, it's an improvement.

    David - He shuddered and he didn't know if it was fear, misery...or arousal. Shit.

    David Evans - After losing his best friend David has to learn how to let go...again. David's genius lay in his stubborn, hard, yet gentle love.

    THE WRITING

    The fingers had turned gentle, not stopping him now, but holding him, connecting him with David like an extension cord to the heart.

    Honestly, I wasn't struck or un-struck by the writing, which I think is saying something. The writing didn't get in the way of this strong story but it was compelling. It could easily have taken away from the depths of the story if the imagery had been too strong. I think the talented author knowingly drove the reader's imagination to fill in the horrifying blanks. I know I visited a few dark corners of my mind while reading this.

    THE STORY

    ...but love -- that was asking more than he felt ready to give. It was commitment. It was eternity. It was prison...

    Zach and David's story is deep and unique and whole and hard. The focus is on Zach's reemergence into humanity, but it's clear how his capture has affected so many others, particularly David. David tried to move on from Zach's kidnapping, but he remained "emotionally unavailable." David has nearly as much of a difficult struggle ahead of him as Zach, it's an engrossing part of the story. Zach's parents are almost too perfect in this story and yet I find myself hoping that I would respond the same way if a tragedy like this one ever crossed my path.

    I've focused on the heavy, dark, emotional aspect of this story, but I should be clear there is a lot of love here. Good, sexy, enjoyable love.

    "Jesus, Taff, you're like hot and cold running boyfriend," Zach complained. "I'm not surprised your lovers dumped you--I'm surprised they didn't murder you."

    3.5 Stars

    Book Description/Review Below:

    Jared Thomas has lived his whole life in the small mountain town of Coda, Colorado. He can't imagine living anywhere else. Unfortunately, the only other gay man in town is twice his age and used to be his teacher, so Jared is resigned to spending his life alone. Until Matt Richards walks into his life, that is. Matt has just been hired by the Coda Police Department, and he and Jared immediately become friends. Matt claims he is straight, but for Jared, having a sexy friend like Matt is way too tempting. Facing Matt's affair with a local woman, his disapproving family, and harassment from Matt's co-workers, Jared fears they'll never find a way to be together-if he can even convince Matt to try.

    Romantic - YES

    Sweet - YES

    Tummy Squeezes - YES

    Happily Ever After - YES

    THE STORY

    "The only thing you can do is decide how to live your own life. And to hell with everybody else"

    So then why a 3.5?

    My hesitation in giving this a higher rating is that it had predictable devices, BUT then I also found myself being surprised as a twist slowly developed. The story started out really well, has all the elements that make a MM romance enjoyable, but a couple of unnecessary cliche scenes gooped up the story and made it feel like a junior effort in an otherwise believable book. Also, I felt like the "promises" theme was dropped somewhere in the middle of the book.

    So, this is a solid 3.5 stars. I can't quite go 4 stars, but I can recommend it as a solid read.

    THE CHARACTERS

    Matt Richards --

    "Whatever this is with me and you, it's so much more, and I can't make it go away."

    How could those words make me so happy while hurting so much at the same time?

    Gorgeous Matt is the new guy in town and he makes fast friends with Jared. The author did a superb job in making it clear that Matt was struggling with his emotions, but I would have like to see certain parts of this story from his perspective.

    Jared Thomas --

    "...you can't just pick tiny pieces of yourself to share, and keep the rest to yourself. It doesn't work that way. It's all or nothing."

    Jared is secure with his life. He's out to his family and friends, living where he wants to be and has everything in control. Then Matt enters his life.

    THE WRITING

    The light breeze, the smell of the forest, the rushing water, the whispering leaves--they seem to fill me, like my soul is opening up and being swept clean. It is the only thing in my life I could call spiritual.

    I found the writing straight forward and clean. Not prose filled, but still visual enough to keep me high in the mountains and this little town of Cody.

    It was simply a silent recognition that we truly were kindred spirits. That we had both been alone for a long time and maybe we didn't need to be anymore.

    of Teasing Tension!!!!

    Aww, poor Jared, he's about to forget all of his money woes while being slowly...driven...out...of...his...mind. Luckily, he's being tantalized by the very tasty Tristan. Torquing the entire tale is the john, or "Rolex" as we come to know him.

    God, but he was turned on, and he didn't know who was controlling this little game: Tristan, who withheld action for money, or the john, who could turn up the heat any time he wanted to he if would just stop fucking around and put some bloody money on the table.

    Trousers, treasure trails, throats, touches and telltale smacks. Yeah...and I've only pulled out some of the 'T' words. Oh, and let's not forget about Tristan. Tantalizing, twisted Tristan. Did I already mention him?

    Tristan's boneless figure solidified one liquid joint at a time, and he sat up, rolling his shoulders under his slick, black shirt.

    Give yourself a treat and enjoy this tale. The incredibly well paced tease is very worth your time.

    Btw, you might want to read this quickie in a quiet, comfy place. Alone. Or then again, maybe not entirely alone.
