Warning per author/publisher: This is extreme psychological reconditioning, the deconstruction of someone's mind. Please be aware that there is extreme non-con in there. My Review:

MIND. FUCKINGLY. BRILLIANT.

IF you want to know what psychological manipulation feels like, read Antidote. If you don't. Don't

This is not a stand-alone. You must read Don’t, first. Then read it again before you start this one. I should have. I struggled to remember pertinent information, but either Jack L. Pyke did her job of implanting information into my brain when I read Don’t, or she did her job of extracting what I had buried and then forced me to remember. Then she tied it all together, expanded on it, ripped it apart and created a brand new beginning.

THE CHARACTERS
“I can’t climb in to my head and order thoughts as easily as I do my sock drawer…”
Jack Harrison – We talk about broken, fucked up characters all the time. Jack trumps them all.
“Jan got you like that, and I fucking loved how even Gray was nearly caught in his gentle trap.”
Jan Richard– Vanilla, intelligent, "normal". His nightmare became mine. Not only does he ground this story, but he lets us see.
“Part of me swore that the search for that quiet was what drove Gray, because the moment Jack quietened, so did he.”
Gray Raoul – Complex. Dangerous. Powerful. His deeply hidden compassion almost did me in.

THE STORY
“There was a brush of his nose along Gray’s jaw for the second time now, and the need to find out the what and why behind it nearly killed me.”
I don’t even think I can tell you anything. I’m short changing this fascinating piece of work by not expounding here, but I fear there is nothing that I can say to do it justice. Not to mention that I’d give something away.

In generalities the book starts on a high. Things are good and this is where it must start, at a pinnacle, both because it has to give you that high to cling on to and also because it makes the depths of despair that much more poignant. There is no light at the bottom, but there is memory of it.

I will just say, if you’re up for it, read this.

THE WRITING

The brilliance of this work comes from the way the author was able to keep me off kilter and grounded all at once. I was flailing, but for reasons. I couldn’t put the book down.

The Blurb:

“No head games, no tests. Just us, Jack.”

Videos of Jack having sex with a man who brutally mutilated teenagers for fun should have stayed dead and buried, just like the man who filmed them. So when footage of Jack’s past starts showing up on internet port sites, Jack’s whole world is again turned on its head.

At first, the videos merely unsettle Jack’s fire-and-ice world of Gray Raoul’s BDSM kink and Jan Richards’ gentle, vanilla touch. But when the videos of teenaged Jack get more extreme, even Gray becomes suspicious, leaving Jack isolated from the protection of the Masters’ Circle.

Jack soon finds himself at the mercy of a group of men set on altering Jack’s perceptions of BDSM as brutally as possible. Jack’s sex life is now on camera for a whole new audience, and the only thing he has left to lose is himself.

At the same time, I had to take breaks to digest, adjust, and breathe. The intensity caused me to experience real life physical reactions; racing heart rate, tears, depression, and anger. It takes a lot, any more, for me to reach that level of response to writing. It was more than just the nature of the story, it was the writing that gripped me so hard.

Ms. Pyke is building something here. This book took a wild deviation from where I thought this series would go. Not in the nature of the events, but in the nature of where I thought the main players would go. This opens entirely new paths.

I was struck at the end by the way the author’s writing changed to fit the moment. It became lyrical only when it was necessary and it may have saved me. I read the last two pages over and over and over again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I'm a pure M/M erotic romance author who specialises in BDSM.
With a wicked love for portraying D/s relationships in particular, all added to a psychological thriller edge, kink and mind games go hand in hand here.
I've been writing for about eight years but have only recently come into erotica. Beside spending time getting to know the BDSM community, I've also spent time editing for one of the top M/M publishers.

THE BEST BOOK I’VE READ ALL YEAR!

Wow, that’s a pretty big statement to make, isn’t it? But if it’s true, it’s true. Ms. Castle took her characters and her storyline from Chance Assassin (my review here), made them more damaged, more fragmented, more cracked, and then she doused them with even more of the peculiar and hilarious depravity that she alone can dispense. Every page, every line, was pure entertainment.

▪ DEPRAVED ▪ IMMORAL ▪ DEBAUCHED ▪ OBSCENE
▪ DECADENT ▪ ROMANCE ▪ DYSFUNCTIONAL ▪

THE CHARACTERS

Frank – Poor, beautiful, guilty and sometimes clueless Frank. It’s all on his back. Everything. Maybe if he’d get V on his back everything would be better already.
Because the guilt he felt was never over killing. It was the lack of it, the remorselessness, which spoke of true evil.

Vincent (V) – The most spoiled, conceited, outrageous brat in M/M fiction, and he deserves every damned spanking he asks for.

That was what made Vincent so perfect. His raison d’ĂȘtre. He was feminine to the point of being non-threatening, and masculine enough to prove Frank was homosexual after all. Not to mention obscenely beautiful.

Casey – Innocence incarnate. Beautiful, sweet, gifted. Throughout the book I wanted to protect him from anything dangerous or obscene, but he’s surrounded by it constantly. In book 1 I may have thought Casey simple. Here he’s alive, bright and fantastic!

He was a mere boy with a crush. Hardly even handsome, with his silly long hair. He was androgynous the way models had become, with an interesting more than attractive face, and a thin sexless body. And he was an artist for fuck’s sakes. He probably didn’t even have a criminal record.

Bella – Barely five feet tall, bitchy, deadly and so damned funny I couldn’t help but fall in love with her. It takes a lot for me to fall for a female character these days, but I’d be Bella’s bitch any day. She’d cut me though. But who cares, ‘cus she’d wrap me in mink, kiss my head and then kick me.

She applied lipstick as she walked, her Manolo Blahnik stiletto boots leaving holes in the snow like stab wounds.

THE STORY

“Vincent thinks we should kill all five of them. He’s bored.” Frank was also bored, but unlike Vincent, he had chosen retirement. And that decision, along with the reasons behind it, continued to put a strain on their relationship.

Full of snappy, self-aware immorality.

Frank and Vincent have retired to the French countryside to live out their days as normal citizens. Aww, can you hear the birds singing in the trees and the dogs wagging

The Blurb:

Two years following the events of Chance Assassin, Frank and Vincent are living in France, struggling with retirement. And with each other. When someone from Frank's past shows up and threatens to bring his personal and professional lives together with a bang, it's up to them to find out who ordered the hit and take them out first. Things may not be what they seem, but they may be exactly what Frank and Vincent need.

their tales? Well, you could if it weren’t for Vincent shooting at raw meat nailed to the trees to stay in shape. Fortunately for us they aren’t normal, at all, and retired life won’t suit them for long.

Casey, Frank’s brother, his mother and stepdad have come to visit and….well never mind because that doesn’t matter at all. What does matter is that Casey meets the most debauched and coutured female in existence. Enter Bella, Frank’s sister, dripping from head to toe in Versace and weapons, she is the rudest, foulest, meanest, most wonderful character I’ve had the pleasure of falling for. Yep, you heard me, I fell for the female lead. Even more impossible is the dubious and unique pairing of Casey and Bella. For one minute I thought this het-couple might steal the show and I was worried because this is MY gay romance dammit.

OH Yeah. There is a huge, twisted mystery packed with murder, assassins, blood, death, sex and intrigue. In fact there’s so much going on in this story from every angle that it’s going to work your head. Most of this book reads like the exciting ending of other books. The energy and wit run throughout. Bring your thinking cap, ‘cus Ms. Castle is going to throw a lot your way.

THE WRITING

First off you need to know that this book is written with alternating POV’S which differs from Chance Assassin’s first person, present tense writing. This matters because it isn’t just Vincent’s thoughts that we need to see in this book. For me, it didn’t matter whether we were in V’s, Frank’s, Casey’s or Bella’s head, it was all great and I just wanted more of each one, unlike when an author slips you into a POV that you just don’t care about.

Secondly, and maybe more importantly, is how much this author has improved her writing. It’s miles beyond her work in the first book. Her already colorful characters are not only instantly memorable, but they’re also more endearing. Endearing assassins you say? Yes. I do say.

Lastly, I’m putting Nicole Castle on my quirky authors pedestal with my favorites, Douglas Adams and Jasper Fforde. Her creation of outlandish assassins tearing at your heartstrings deserves no less.

~ ~ ~

THIS is why we read SEJakes.

So many questions answered.
So many new revelations.
So much emotion, sex, vulnerability, depth and pain.
And still, so much remains unknown.

THE CHARACTERS

Prophet Drews -
Prophet put up a hell of a fight, but when he surrendered it was so completely, unmistakably beautiful.

Tommy Boudreaux -
Everything had suddenly gotten really complicated…and somehow better at the same time.
 Lansing - CIA prick.

John Morse - Best friend, first love, SEAL teammate. And a dead man.

Cillian and Mal  - OH man, I can’t, just can’t.

King and Ren and Hook - Yup, they’re here and in fine form.

THE STORY

Intrigue x 10
Mystery wrapped in tension, action, danger.
Sexy, well…Tommy & Prophet.
Love. Yes. Love.
And Chapter One doesn’t require breathing.

The entirety of this story is just too big to condense here, but suffice it to say that this third book

The Blurb:

Before Prophet Drews can have a future, he must first put his past to rest.

Prophet Drews is a man on the edge, and he’s pulling Tom Boudreaux, his partner on the job and in real life, right over with him. When his old CO calls in a favor, Prophet asks Tom to join the off-the-grid rescue. But the mission raises all of Prophet’s old ghosts: CIA assassins, the terrorist Sadiq, and most importantly, John—traitor, former teammate, and Prophet’s first love.

To help bury those ghosts for good, Prophet and Tom gather the members of Prophet’s former SEAL team . . . and a spook named Cillian who’s been tailing Prophet for years. In the process, Prophet is forced to face his team’s shifting loyalties, ghosts who refuse to stay dead, and scariest of all, his own limitations.

With everyone’s lives in danger, Prophet and Tom must unravel a tangled knot of secrets, including their own. Prophet must decide how much to reveal to Tom, while Tom must decide how far he’s willing to go to help Prophet lay his ghosts to rest.

in the series picks up about four months past where Long Time Gone left off and at about the same time as Dirty Deeds begins.

Things have been moving forward with Tommy and Prophet on the home front, but now they are called upon to help a buddy who has been kidnapped, stirring up old conflicts. There’s no question that they’ll take on this mission together, but they’ll also be joined by colleagues…and ghosts. Believe me, I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of everything that this book contains.

THE WRITING

SE Jakes drives her story and her reader like an OTR  trucker drives a semi; with control, power and a her sights set on getting the product there. She knows where she’s going and you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
And that’s when he began fucking Prophet in earnest, saying his name like a cross between a chant and a prayer, and Prophet was damned sure no one had made it sound better.
There’s a reason this series has become so popular and it’s because of the storytelling. The books create discussion and you just want to tear ‘em down, figure ‘em out and discuss, discuss, discuss. I think I pity the poor reader out there who doesn’t have someone to hash this all out with.

“We’ve gotten through a lot of shit already, Tommy. A lot. Maybe more than we’re supposed to. Maybe we’ve reached our limit.
“Still trying to protect me.”
“Always.”
“I’m going to chance it. Figure the universe already put us through hell. I think we’re meant to come out the other side together.”
Prophet rolled his eyes.
“Romantic fucking voodoo Cajun shit.”
“That’s lovely. Anyway, what would we do with all our free time?”
“We could go run a goat farm,” Prophet suggested.

OH, and to answer my lead up post to this review:
Isn’t it enough that you threw the couch out the window?”
“You fucking love that shit,” Tom growled. “The jealousy turns you the hell on.”
See below, to find out what ^^^ that’s all about ;)

THE SOFA?

Daylight Again by SE Jakes - Spotlight & Giveaway, Plus Excerpt!

Thanks so much for hosting a spotlight of my new release— Daylight Again!  It’s book 3 in the Hell or High Water series, and it’s the return of Prophet and Tommy.  And Mal.  And Cillian.  And, as usual, some surprises.  Hang on for another wild (and hot) ride!

About Daylight Again:

Before Prophet Drews can have a future, he must first put his past to rest.

Prophet Drews is a man on the edge, and he’s pulling Tom Boudreaux, his partner on the job and in real life, right over with him. When his old CO calls in a favor, Prophet asks Tom to join the off-the-grid rescue. But the mission raises all of Prophet’s old ghosts: CIA assassins, the terrorist Sadiq, and most importantly, John—traitor, former teammate, and Prophet’s first love.

The Exerpt:

God, Prophet fucking loved a good bar fight—hadn’t had one in a while. He sent tables and chairs flying, was more cautious with actual people, but hell, anyone who came at him got a good, sharp right hook.
Ren had, of course, started the fight when Mal gave the signal that Cillian was heading toward the bar. Now, Prophet and Tom were the only ones from their group left inside the bar, and Tom ambled over to him while he waited by the dancers’ platform that was mostly unharmed. As were the dancers.
      “You all right?” Tom asked.
Prophet nodded, noting that Tom looked entirely too pleased with himself. “That felt good.”
     Tom shook his head.
“What? I needed to release some tension.” Prophet stretched his neck. “I definitely don’t get to do that often enough.”
“There are other ways to relieve tension, Proph.”
“I know that. And now I’m going to try one of them.”
He grabbed Tom and yanked him close, rubbing his rough-stubbled cheek against Tom’s, knowing full well Tom loved the scratch and burn. “You fought too, Cajun.”
“Self-defense, pure and simple,” he protested. “And I saw Mal and Cillian. We were clear before the fight.”
“And after. Saw Cillian leave with the majority of the crowds,” Prophet confirmed. “Where were they?”
“Closer to the back.” Tom waved a hand casually in that direction. “Shouldn’t we leave?”
“Not till we get the all clear.”
He pulled Tommy onto the dance floor, wrapping around him, burying his face in Tommy’s neck. Tom did the same as they swayed. Partly so they wouldn’t be spotted, but mainly because it was really nice to be able to hold Tom like this.
“Want to fuck you right here,” Prophet murmured. “Get on my knees, suck you. Then turn you around, hold you against the pillar and take you in front of everyone.”
     Tom groaned against Prophet’s ear.
“Ah, you like that idea,” Prophet shifted his glance to another couple, made sure Tom noticed they were stroking each other.
“Fuck,” Tom muttered. “We need to go to clubs more often.”
“Right,” Prophet teased. “Because we don’t have enough sex.” But really, sex with Tommy was everything. It was where and how he’d gotten the best possible education on everything Tommy—and he was well aware that Tom had gotten the same information on him. Until you really knew what someone was like in bed, you didn’t really know them at all.
“Never enough,” Tom informed him seriously. “And maybe I’d push you onto your knees. Then down on the ground. Spread you and fuck you in front of everyone.”
Prophet hissed a breath, bared his throat slightly. “You’d make me perform?”
      “You’d fucking love it, Proph.”
Fuck yeah, he would. “When this is all over . . . that.”
      “Yeah, that,” Tom echoed.
