Review: Running Wild (Havoc) by SE Jakes - 5 Stars

Running Wild (A Havoc Novel)
5 Stars

Author:

The Blurb:

Embrace the danger.

Sean Rush is an adrenaline junkie. That’s why he was in the Army, why he steals and races classic muscle cars . . . and why he can’t stay away from bad boy Ryker, a Havoc Motorcycle Club lieutenant. Fortunately, Ryker can’t seem to stay away from Sean—he’s spent the last eight months breaking into Sean’s apartment and stealing into his bed, leaving Sean physically satisfied but increasingly restless.

Sean has always avoided relationships. He likes to come and go without being controlled. And Ryker is possibly the most controlling man he’s ever known. Still, he finds that he wants more from Ryker than their silent nighttime encounters.

Then one of Sean’s thefts goes bad, and Ryker’s protective instincts kick into overdrive. He takes Sean to the Havoc compound, determined to keep him safe. But Sean’s past threatens the safety of Havoc—and everything Ryker holds dear. Worse, Ryker’s hiding secrets of his own. Soon it’s obvious that the adrenaline rush can’t keep them together anymore. But maybe love can.

Review:

If you’re already a Jakes fan then you’re going to love this one. It’s just more of everything that Jakes delivers.

If you’re new to SE Jakes, climb on the bitch seat ‘cus this one’s gonna own you.
I didn’t know. I mean I just expected a straightforward MC story. I should’ve known it’d be so much more. SE Jakes has been taking her writing to the next level for a while now and her latest work is involved, complex and thrilling. Add in the broken, bent, hurting and sexy-as-all-hell men, a hint of the paranormal and well, you have an SE Jakes book. Just the way a new series should start.

THE CHARACTERS
My cock had zero problems with memory, though. Like a heat-seeking missile . . .
Sean Rush (Rush) - Mouthy, bratty, wiseassed, horny, pretty and pretty tough. He’s got miles to ride before he figures things out, but hey, what a thrill it is to ride along.
Conventional wisdom stated that the bottom was the one in control. Whoever made that shit up hadn’t been fucked by Ryker. Because I was on top, riding him, setting the pace and the only one orchestrating this thing? The dark-haired, dark-eyed man who undid me with a look, never mind his cock.
Ryker - Jeezus, yes please! I’ll take two. Ryker is a man of very few words, but he has no trouble driving his point home. Not that Sean doesn’t challenge him every step of the way.

Gotta-have-more-right-NOW-side-characters - Noah, Linc, Casey, Sweet, Greta and others that have to be redacted…because reasons.

THE STORY
I didn’t need to be rational when a hot, tattooed biker was breaking in to my place and fucking me senseless.
Sean Rush, a bad-boy car thief is fighting his wild side, but he’s seduced by trouble with every move he makes. Speaking of seduced? Meet Ryker. Holy hell. The sexy, biker-man-of-mystery has been sliding into Sean’s bed for months, but does he have ulterior motives? Or is it just sex. Sean’s happy with the easy hookup, he’s used to them, so why does he want more? Or does he?

When Sean’s best friend gets into deeper than he can handle with a car theft ring Sean doesn’t hesitate to help, but this just sets up a tangled web of fubar that slowly unravels throughout the story. I thought I knew things, then I didn’t. There’s doubt and insecurity and PTSD and a whole Havoc MC compound to conquer. But mostly it’s about Sean Rush learning to love, to be loved and to just melt under Ryker’s very, very capable hands.

THE WRITING
Another vision flashed in front of me—that cherry-red Ferrari, me helpless and spread across the hood, and Ryker fucking the hell out of me. Holding my hips as he filled me. Like he was claiming me, punishing me . . . for stealing, for racing, for talking to the other guys while he was there.
If this book was just about the hot, steamy, gorgeous sexy scenes that’d probably be enough with the way that SE write’s ‘em. But there so much more. She successfully sets up the series with this first book in a way that makes the reader want to know more about life inside Havoc and the men that are, or are to become, involved.

In this semi-contained world, Havoc is facing challenges and I, for one, can’t wait to get even more involved. There’s mystery, spy games, intrigue and something a little spooky going on here and that just makes it all the more thrilling.
Stealing was freedom. Being forced to steal, not so much.

This story is based on my prompt for the Love's Landscape Event and yes, I'm proud, biased and really thrilled with it. Enjoy!

I don't do .gif reviews, but since the story is based on a .gif, why not?

My first time submitting a prompt to the M/M Romance Group's DRitC - Love's Landscapes Event couldn't have been better. Thanks to everyone involved for making this happen. What fun!!!

Hilarious Sweet Funny Adorable Awkward Perfect

My Review:
First, K.C. I just gotta say you...

Crushed It!!!

Then, you just have to know that

I dunno what my favorite part is.

I loved the dressing room scene. Makes me want to visit a leather shop in the hopes of running into guys having this much fun.

Buuut then

I laughed so hard during the Skype session my poor dog ran and hid under the sofa.

I cried while laughing at Evan being carried outside. OH his embarrassment killed me.

Mostly though, I'm

crossing my fingers and begging that there will be more, because this was not nearly enough. I could read volumes more of Julien and Evan.

So my beautiful, darlin', K.C. ...

Thank you for going way, way over and beyond anything I could have hoped for with my prompt. I LOVE IT!!!

PHOTO DESCRIPTION:
A tall, dark-haired, young man has pulled down his leather pants in a bathroom and is frantically splashing water over his legs. The image is a gif of Ross from the show Friends.

STORY LETTER: Dear Author,

My boyfriend and I have always played it safe, but recently we’ve tried to experiment with some of the more extreme aspects of the sexual realm. Well, extreme for us. Unfortunately, things haven’t always gone our way. We’re both a little awkward and geeky, but we like to flirt with “danger” (as long as it’s safe). For instance, our scene with chains turned into a giggle-fest because they were too cold. And don’t even get me started on what happened when we tried exhibitionism.

Now, here I am trying to get into my brand new leather pants because I’m supposed to be playing the role of Dom, while my boyfriend is all tied up in the bedroom. I can’t exactly go out there like this.

Please help us find our way in this brave new world, but make sure we have fun along the way.

***I envision this story describing some interesting scenes where these two figure out what “does” work for them. However, I’m pretty open for anything. You can make this as wild or tame as you like as long as it keeps a certain level of comedic charm. These two are in love and trust each other, so I don’t have any issues if they want to try a threesome (or more) or other playfulness. But mostly, you can just take this in any direction you want. Have fun!

Sincerely, Lisa T

REVIEW

There are books that have backstory and things you need to know about the character’s past, but this brought it all forward and aligned the main character’s history with his present day in a way that was engrossing and unsettling, as it’s meant to be.

THE CHARACTERS

Jonathan David - Complex.

Eddie Dorman - Wonderful.

Alan Pemberly Tragic.

  THE STORY
You can’t run away forever, the annoying voice chided him. Jonathan wrapped a mental hand around its throat and warned it that if it spoke again, he would choke the life out of it. In fear, the voice quieted.
This is a unique mix of romance and suspense with a strong PNR element. The modern day struggles of a couple just getting their lives in sync tempered by a darker past has a

The Blurb:

Their new home on Frederick Street in Clay Center, Kansas, was supposed to give writer Jonathan David and his husband, clinical psychologist Dr. Eddie Dorman, an opportunity to enjoy married life. Jonathan has just released his first major bestseller, and he hopes to finally escape his traumatic past and find the quiet existence he has always craved. Eddie has taken a job at the Kansas State University psychology department, and they intend to begin anew.

They have barely settled in when the nightmare begins. Noises, disembodied voices, and mysterious apparitions make Jonathan’s life hell. Part of the house has decided to bare its teeth, show its jagged edges, and bring back the worst of Jonathan’s past. At first, Eddie cannot perceive the spectral events and fears for his husband’s sanity. When he’s also affected by the haunting, he’s unsure of what to do but refuses to be beaten.

Together, they seek a way to fight the forces trying to tear them apart. The world is a frightening place, but confronting their fears plunges Jonathan and Eddie into absolute horror.

balance that is at once honest and frustrating. Jonathan and Eddie just want to plant roots and settle down, but even though they try to deny the past and move forward, that past is coming for them.

The romance isn’t perfect and, in fact, is downright rocky, but I had no doubt that this was a relationship worth fighting for.

The way the author showed today’s contemporary life of a committed gay couple and mirrored it against the, not nearly distant enough, past is particularly well done. Done so well, in fact, that you may not even notice it happening. We may think we’ve come a long way, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still fighting things we thought we’ve overcome.

THE WRITING
It also occurred to him that, in the process of making the yard produce what they wanted it to, the earth had to be scarred and beaten up.
I found some of the time shifts and flashbacks confusing. Possibly much of this was intentional, but instead of being mystifying it was often unclear. There was also, in my opinion, an entirely unnecessary bigot inserted into the storyline.

However, I also found the writing to be, mellow. Not in a dull or slow way, but in a way that helped me keep my calm through a story that may have been overwritten otherwise. This isn’t intended to be a thriller or an edge-of-your-seat read – although it does have its moments – it’s intended to feel introspective while fully gripping you with the story. Achieved.

This is my first read by Mr. Feeley, but it won’t be my last.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

F.E. Feeley Jr was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and lived there for twenty years before joining the military. He is a veteran of the US Armed Services; having done a tour in support of Operation Iraq Freedom in 2002-2003, he turned college student, pursuing a degree in political science. He now lives in Southeast Texas where he is engaged to the love of his life, John, and where they raise their 1½ year old German shepherd, Kaiser.

As a young man, reading took center stage in his life, especially those novels about ghosts, witches, goblins, and all the other things that went bump in the night. His favorite authors include such writers as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Anne Rice, whose work allowed him to travel to far off places and meet fascinating and scary characters. As a gay man, he wishes to be able to write good fictional literature for those who love the genre and to write characters that readers can relate to. All in all, he is a cigarette smokin’, whiskey drinkin’, rock and roll lovin’, tattoo wearin’ dreamer of a man with a wonderful husband who puts up with his crap and lets him write his stories.

CUT SCENE
Nick was silent as he looked out on the moonlit fields. They were peaceful now, but it seemed there were echoes of gunfire and cannon blasting, bayonets clashing, men and horses screaming in fear and pain.
“It doesn’t really matter why, or how history writes it down,” Nick said. “The only thing that matters is that every man out there believed in what he was doing. He was standing on this ground, willing to take a bullet fired by his brother, to protect something he thought was worth dying for. That country. That king. That ideal. That land back home. That flag. That man leading him. That man standing beside him.” Nick’s voice filled with emotion and he lowered his head. “The burden of death and bravery in places like this is heavy. I’ve always been able to feel it. Someone should feel it.”
Even if Kelly hadn’t already felt the power of this place, it came through clearly in Nick’s voice. It was holy ground, in its own way, bearing the gravity of the past up in what were now wild green pastures dotted with stone and tourists. The agony of it. The struggle. And Nick believed the same as those men, felt it down to his bones. Call it patriotism. Heroism. Integrity. Honor. That indefinable something that had driven so many men to die for something they felt more important than life also lived inside Nick. It had lived inside their team. And if what he believed in was threatened, he’d do the same as they had done; die defending it.
Kelly’s chest constricted as he looked at Nick’s profile in the moonlight. He had never believed that men like this still existed, not until he’d met Sidewinder.Nick’s breath billowed in front of him in the cold. His eyes were taking in the battlefield, seeing things Kelly couldn’t see, remembering things Kelly had lived with him. Kelly swallowed hard and set one hand lightly on Nick’s shoulder. He couldn’t think of anything to say, so he didn’t speak at all.

The Blurb:

When Nick O'Flaherty arrives at the scene of a double homicide to find he has a witness to the crime, he thinks it’s his lucky day. But when he realizes his witness is suffering from amnesia and can’t even remember his own name, Nick wishes he’d gone with his gut and put in for vacation time.

Then Nick’s boyfriend and former Recon teammate, Kelly Abbott, joins him in Boston, and Nick finds his hands a little too full as the case and his personal life collide. The witness he’s dubbed “JD” is being tailed by Julian Cross, a retired CIA hitman. To complicate matters further, JD forms an attachment to Nick that Nick struggles not to respond to as they search for the key to JD’s identity.

Trying to determine whether JD is friend or foe as they investigate the crime puts them on the trail of a much older mystery. When multiple attempts are made on their lives, Nick is forced to turn to old enemies and new allies to solve a centuries-old crime before he and Kelly get added to the history books.

My Review:

This is something of a split decision. I recommend the read, but it started stronger than it ended, for me. I think you'll identify this one as  a cross between the movies National Treasure and Da Vinci Code. I suspect that was intentional (National Treasure is referenced in the narrative) and it makes for a good bit of fun. The treasure seeking adventure plotted out well enough, but it's some of the characters emotional reactions that didn't make sense at times.

THE CHARACTERS:
He joked about being the bad cop and how everyone here considered him a hard-ass, but Kelly knew better. Nick had the purest heart of anyone he'd ever known.
Nick O'Flaherty - I'm a sucker for a big, redheaded, alpha. Add to that his honor, intelligence and undeniable love for Kelly and you can't help but love him.
"It's me, babe," Kelly whispered against Nick's chest. "It's Doc, you're safe."
Kelly Abbott - Kelly really can keep his cool under pressure. He has much to contend with in this book, but he keeps it together, always with a smile and good humor.
Fuck, he was kind of Nick's type.
JD (John Doe) - I really liked JD. I have no idea if Roux has plans for him in the future though. I was sort of hoping that she had plans to "use" him a bit more here (i.e., MMM) but alas, that didn't materialize.

Julian Cross - Julian's, all too brief, appearances and castrated, cut-off-at-the-knees weakness did.not.work.for.me. Okay, maybe he's one of my book boyfriends, and I can't help it, but most of his actions were not in his nature. Compromised or not.

THE STORY:

Kelly and Nick's vacation plans are usurped by a case that Nick has to see through. What seems to be a run-of-the-mill robbery turns out to be much more. Adventures, shoot outs and cemetery scenes ensue. That's okay, we like that stuff. We also like the hot, passionate love scenes Roux writes.
"Soft spot?" "Please," Kelly said with weak laugh. "If we weren't a thing, you'd be all over him." Nick opened his mouth to protest, then shut it with a snap of his teeth. "You're probably right," he admitted.
There's also JD, a witness who's memory loss keeps us from knowing if he's the good guy or the bad guy. Not to mention his attraction to Nick, and visa-versa, also keeps us from knowing if he's a good guy or not. (I was hoping for not, as I mentioned above, in the MMM sense, but that's just me.)
The state of Nick and Ty's fracturing friendship was a topic only the bravest of men would touch on. Zane had balls of brass to do it.
There are brief, very brief, appearances by Ty, Zane, Julien Cross and Cameron. That's probably where my frustration started. Lesson learned? Keep the story solidly about the MC's, sure? But in this case, it was too clipped. Sorry, maybe some of us just can't be pleased.

THE WRITING:

The tell-tale marks of Roux's writing are all here. The good and the not-so-good. Snappy, interactive banter, quick, smart comebacks, and deeply romantic, soul-touching confessions wrap you up in the characters. Adventure, wrapped in mystery surrounds you in an entertaining getaway. But, missed opportunities, misplaced sentiment, continuity errors and frustrating, incomplete character appearances just leave me wanting something more.

Again, I recommend the read, particularly for fans, you'll like what's here. You'll just miss what's not.
