Blood & Thunder (Thirds Series, Bk #2) By Charlie Cochet Cover Reveal Blitz

Blood & Thunder
(Thirds Series, Bk #2)
by Charlie Cochet

Blurb:
When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

“It is exceptionally important for you to know when your partner is playing and when he or she is irate. Agent Daley, please demonstrate.”
Dex arched an eyebrow at the instructor. “Which one?”
“Both.”
“You want me to piss him off?” What kind of class was this?
“In a matter of speaking. Yes.”
“Great.” Okay. How could he piss off his partner without losing a limb? What he needed to do was annoy Sloane, really annoy him. Shouldn’t be too difficult. Dex had annoying down to an art. He thrust a finger in Sloane’s face, knowing how much his Felid partner hated that. Then he started singing.  Nothing annoyed his partner like Hall and Oates.
Sloane let out a fierce roar, and Dex started dancing around him, his voice going high-pitched for certain lyrics while he snapped his fingers. Sloane pawed at him, and Dex spun on his heels, avoiding getting smacked. His partner hissed, baring his fangs before he took off after Dex.
“Shit!” Dex bolted, weaving through the rows of agents who were either laughing or watching him in disbelief while their instructor narrated as if this was nothing more than some nature video. Dex could see the title now. National Geographic presents Predatory Partners.
“Understand your partner’s behavior. Why is he or she behaving in such a fashion?”
“Because I pissed him off?” Dex called out over his shoulder, dashing back toward the instructor.
“Very good. Thank you, Agent Daley. You may now soothe your partner.”
Clearly, Dr. Eldridge didn’t personally know Sloane Brodie. Dex put his hands up, walking backward slowly as he spoke to his partner.
“Hey, buddy. Just following orders, you know? You heard him. I wasn’t the one who wanted to piss you off.” Dex crouched down and held a hand out. Please don’t bite me. Please don’t bite me. Sloane blinked before jumping up on his two back paws, his front paws pushing against Dex’s shoulders and knocking him onto his back. Sloane pinned him, and Dex braced himself. When Sloane started licking his face, Dex shut his eyes tight. “Okay, I get it. Payback. Take notes people.” Dex pointed at his partner. “This is what I meant about payback.”
“Agent Brodie, if you’ll resume your place beside your partner. Agent Daley, you may return to your mat.”
Sloane did as asked, and Dex wiped at his face with his sleeve before returning to his spot. He was never more grateful not to have ended up partnered with Ash than he was at this moment.
“Once you have assessed your partner and deduced he or she is irate, you will want to give your partner space. If you feel it’s safe to approach, you will do so with caution. Deal with what’s causing the issue. For example, Agent Fuller, please approach Agent Daley. Slowly.”
The moment Agent Fuller got to his feet, Sloane’s ears twitched. “Um, I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Dex said, watching Agent Fuller creep toward Dex, as if Sloane hadn’t noticed. The Human rookie was clearly unaccustomed to dealing with Felids. “My partner’s a little on the grumpy side and poking the sleeping jaguar with a pointy stick might not end so well.”
Agent Fuller paused, his panicked gaze going to their instructor.
“It’s all right, Agent Fuller. Proceed.”
Doing as instructed, Agent Fuller resumed his prowl, while Sloane resumed his grooming of Dex, his heavy tail thumping against the floor. Uh-oh.
“As you can see by Agent Brodie’s movements, he’s fully aware of Agent Fuller. His tail is telling Agent Fuller to be cautious, Agent Daley is his, and he will not take kindly to any aggression toward his partner.”
Dex held up a finger. “Can I just—”
“Please stand, Agent Daley.”
Dex did as asked, and Sloane released a huff at having his grooming session interrupted. This was going to end badly. Dr. Eldridge had no idea what he was about to unleash. Sloane Brodie chewed rookies for breakfast and spit them out. Dex should know.
“Agent Fuller, please advance with the intention of striking Agent Daley.”
Dex didn’t bother taking a stance or prepare for a blow that would never land. His fellow rookies looked at him as if he was crazy, but soon they’d understand. Poor Agent Fuller. The guy pulled back a fist and the moment he took a step, Sloane’s roar echoed across the field. Ears flattened, fangs bare, Sloane leapt toward Agent Fuller who screamed like a preteen at a Bieber concert and made tracks across the field, Sloane on his heels looking mighty pissed.
“Thank you, Agent Brodie,” the instructor called out.
Agent Brodie wiped his ass with their instructor’s polite orders and chased Agent Fuller down the length of the grassy pitch. Dex glanced around. “So which of you is a medic?”
A few shaky hands went up.
“Great. Get ready for the next lesson. How to patch up a Human scratching post.”

~~~
Hi all!
Welcome to the eighth stop in my Hell & High Water Blog Tour. I'm celebrating the release of the first book in my new contemporary-law-enforcement-shifter series, the: THIRDS. Thank you to the lovely Lisa for hosting me, and thank you to everyone who's stopped by. Today I'm going to chat a little about the Therian side of our Destructive Delta Therian agents.
While creating Therians, I had to put a lot of thought into their feral side. How they shifted, the results of their shifting, how much of their Humanity remained, and so on. Since I was going the scientific route, I decided when Therians shifted from Human to animal form, it would be through the rearranging of proteins, fats, and cells, especially since Therians came about through mutated DNA. Because of this, shifting isn't something Therians do on a whim. It's a very painful process. Bones unsnap and snap into place, fur pierces skin, muscle stretches and contracts, and their bodies feel like they're being pulled apart from the inside out. Their mass shifts, so Sloane who weighs in at 240 pounds in his Human form, will shift into a 240 pound jaguar. Hobbs who's nearly three hundred pounds in his Human form will shift into a near three hundred pound tiger. Sorry, but there are no bunny or fox Therians in the THIRDS world. You might be thinking, that's pretty convenient. Yes and no.
When the vaccine was being created by scientists to combat the Melanoe virus, it used strains from animals that appeared to be immune to the virus or at least capable of surviving it. Small animals who became infected with the virus didn't survive, and those that did couldn't survive the mutation brought about by the vaccine. However predators: big cats, wolves, hyenas, and bears were strong enough to survive the mutation and adapt.
Because of this shift in mass, clothes must be removed. For agents, they have a special section inside their tactical vehicles for shifting, complete with a privacy screen. Sometimes getting naked outside the vehicle is necessary. Shifting in public is against the law, classified as a misdemeanor and right up their with indecency and public exposure. Of course THIRDS agents are exempt when they're forced to shift in order to catch criminals. I previously mentioned how important a Therian agent's Human partner is to their survival. When a Therian shifts back into his Human form, he or she doesn't just get up and walk off like nothing's happened. The aftereffects of shifting require Therians to be administered Postshift Trauma Care or they could die. The symptoms are similar to that of having a small epileptic seizure, causing Therians to suffer waves of dizziness, muscle soreness, bruising, and hunger.
Therians have a much higher metabolic rate than Humans, so shifting back into their Human form requires them to get some protein in them quick. Human agents carry Postshift Trauma Care Kits--or a PTSC kit for short--for their partners. Inside, there are things like Gatorade, water, power bars, snacks and a disposable set of clothes, including shoes. This will sustain the Therian agents until they can get a proper meal in them. The rate of recovery from PST will depend on how healthy the Therian is and his or her classification. On our next and final stop, we're going to be talking about Therian classifications and some fun facts on Destructive Delta's animal forms.
Action. Comedy. Romance. And that one weird guy.
When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.
Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.
Running Wild by SE Jakes Virtual Book Tour and Rafflecopter Giveaway
Running Wild Virtual Book Tour with SE Jakes
Attention Is Arbitrary welcomes the very talented and very hot SE Jakes back to the blog for her Running Wild Virtual Book Tour. Please join in and say "hi", she loves to hear from you and, in fact, is answering questions that have come directly from fans for this tour.
Today she tackles a very close, personal question with grace and vigor.
Welcome, SE...
Thanks so much to Attention is Arbitrary for hosting me on the tour for Running Wild: Havoc Book 1. This is the start of a brand new series, with different heroes for each book and HEAs at the end of each book. Sean Rush and Ryker stole my heart a long time ago, and I’m excited for you guys to meet all of them.
***
For help in coming up with blog posts, I asked for help from my Facebook Group—SE’s Dirty Deeds. Here’s one of their questions:
How do your family and friends feel about the genre you write in?
It’s a great question and one I get a little ranty about—and I realize I’m preaching to the choir as well! Okay, so…here’s the thing with a good portion of my extended family (and some RL friends) —none of them are big readers and / or supporters. I mean, yes, occasionally they’ll buy my books but they’re more of the, “I’m so proud of you—I want you to give me an autographed set of your books,” types. To which my husband always says, “Go buy them and we’ll talk.”
So I mean, it’s disappointing in general, but it’s honestly for most of them not a genre thing at all. I’ve written romance for years and some m/m romance as well before I started writing as SE Jakes. I have a cousin who loves to tell people I’m a New York Times bestselling author. I think it’s like, I’m a fun accessory for my family to throw out there (“my cousin’s a writer!”) and you know what, that’s cool.
But some of them can be judgmental, which isn’t so cool.
For instance, one of my cousins (she was twenty-five, newly married at the time and going on vacation with her husband) wanted to read my first Sydney Croft book. I told her it was very erotic and she was like, “That’s fine.” Later, I heard that she told my other cousins that she was ashamed to be related to me and that “OMG, there was sex in the book!” Another friend thinks real books are only “in hardback.” I get a lot of people I know who refer to my books as trashy romance novels. And you know what? I shrug at this point and walk away. Because I wouldn’t attack their jobs, so I’m not sure why mine’s open for discussion. But I don’t argue with people who are pretty obviously misinformed or jealous or not open-minded. And my circle of friends has gotten smaller because of that…and I’m very cool with that.
After I ‘came out’ as SE Jakes, my mom called to congratulate me and tell me that she thought it was wonderful (she won’t read any of my books, at my request for the most part, but she and Dad are proud)…and honestly, I don’t know what any family members or friends who don’t already know will say. And maybe because I feel like, the older I get, the less I care about what other people say (honestly, it’s the best thing about getting older, because you really do stop giving a fuck) and more about making me proud of me, and making sure my husband and kids are proud of me. And they are. So I’m good. And I know where to find my cohorts in romance—you’re all right here.
I feel like, if you’ve got to make someone feel badly about their reading choices, then you’ve got the problem. So rock on with whatever you’re reading or writing—and don’t be afraid to share it. Because romance novels are about two of the best things in life—sex and love, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
The Blurb:
RUNNING WILD: Havoc Book 1
Embrace the danger.
Sean Rush is an adrenaline junkie. That’s why he was in the Army, why he steals and races classic muscle cars . . . and why he can’t stay away from bad boy Ryker, a Havoc Motorcycle Club lieutenant. Fortunately, Ryker can’t seem to stay away from Sean—he’s spent the last eight months breaking into Sean’s apartment and stealing into his bed, leaving Sean physically satisfied but increasingly restless.
Sean has always avoided relationships. He likes to come and go without being controlled. And Ryker is possibly the most controlling man he’s ever known. Still, he finds that he wants more from Ryker than their silent nighttime encounters.
Then one of Sean’s thefts goes bad, and Ryker’s protective instincts kick into overdrive. He takes Sean to the Havoc compound, determined to keep him safe. But Sean’s past threatens the safety of Havoc—and everything Ryker holds dear. Worse, Ryker’s hiding secrets of his own. Soon it’s obvious that the adrenaline rush can’t keep them together anymore. But maybe love can.
FYI, I’m also writing a m/f MC series under the Steph Tyler name—the first book of that series, Vipers Run is out now as well. And there’s a very light crossover in that you’ll see names of MCs that are main characters in my Vipers series—namely Vipers MC, along with the Heathens. Havoc’s friendly with Vipers, not so much with Heathens (they seem to be everyone’s enemy at the moment).
