I could tell you that this is a great mind-fuck book, but that just wouldn't begin to cover it.

For those who stuck through book 2 in this series, Antidotea particularly intense and graphic readthis book is the reward. It answers almost everything you've wanted to know about Jack. It's nowhere near as distressing a read, but it is emotional. I've been waiting, desperately, for this release so I could finally discuss it, because this is a book that begs for discussion.

The Blurb:

The evidence is there in his hands: the DVD and notepad convincing Jack that Gray is responsible for his kidnapping and torture, tearing Jack and Jan brutally apart. But with Jack trapped in his own mind, lost to blackouts and self-harming, getting away from Gray must take a back seat to getting away from himself.

While locked away in a secret facility run by the Masters' Circle, a new beast is unearthed from the depths of Jack's tormented past. Martin only comes out to play when Jack needs to hide, a psychopath as capable of ruining Jack's life as he is of defending him. Martin is the repository for Jack's most horrifying memories, protecting him from the bloody tasks Jack can't handle. Martin's purpose is to drive everyone Jack fears - or loves - away, before they get the chance to hurt Jack again.

Now Jack hurts more than he ever has before, Martin is back, and Jack has to figure out what Martin knows that Jack forgot, before it's too late. (M/M)

THE CHARACTERS

Jack Harrison - Drugs. I was going to need some real big fuck-off drugs to get through this shit.

Jan Richards - "... I'm here. Don't forget that."

Gray Raoul - Yes! We get to see the beginning of Jack and Gray. Oh, Gray is a very smooth man.

Great side characters include: Craig and Doctor Halliday, Sally, Joe and Martin. Craig needs his own story - just sayin'.

"Yeah? You know there's only the definite article 'the' in there that separates therapists from rapists; both come with mind fucks. And I've played with some of the worst."

THE STORY

The timeline of this book takes place just before the ending of book 2. If you've read 2 you'll know that Jack has made tremendous progress and is ready to approach Gray. In order to get to that point though, Jack has to do some self-workto say the least.

During his stay in the MC's Psych Unit, Jack fights, discovers, re-lives, and has incredible blackouts. Jan is there, right there, even if he's mostly out of sight.

Life went calm, so fucking calm as a tear fell. Not his... mine. Resting my head against his, we shared a breath. "Don't..." I mumbled quietly, "kiss me anymore, baby. Please. Don't... just don't... Fucking hurts."
I had such feels for Jan during this read, and don't even get me started on what I think Gray was going through. The focus here is almost all on Jack, and rightfully so. Jack is just so fucked up. His thoughts are so random and disconnected, but still with one main, true thought; Gray and Jan. Always.

THE WRITING

So, here's the deal, the brilliance of this book is that Jack L. Pyke puts you inside Jack's head, inside the mind-fuck and literally inside his intense psychosis.  You're not just viewing this from a distance and trying to figure out what's happening, you're experiencing it as Jack does and believe me that is a whole different level of head-trip.

It's an impressive read and the author does a great job of bringing clarity to most of the questions that the series has held for us so far. Of course, at the same time, she opens new avenues of plot. These primarily revolve around where the three-some relationship of Jack, Jan and Gray is headed.
"Jack, are you aware you're scratching at your hip. Would you prefer to 'go casual' with your photo?"

4 Big Prophet & Tommy Stars!!!!
Read this, read it again and then read it all over. It's volcano hot and even a bit tornado twisted, but there's some tender, sweet, trust going on.

"I just need you, Lije."
The bittersweet is in knowing that there is only one Tommy & Prophet book left and well, that's just to sad to think about. So yeah, I'm just gonna read this again, right now. Love these guys!

The Blurb:

Truth or dare.

Ever since superspy Cillian moved into Prophet’s building, their game of Steal the Couch has been funny to Prophet, but a thorn in Tom’s side. Then Prophet gets bored one night during an ice storm and insists on playing another simple game with Tom: Truth or Dare. In exchange for one of Prophet’s truths, Tom steals the couch one last time.

But Prophet’s truths are never easy—Tom should know that by now—and this one raises questions neither of them quite know how to answer. In response, Tom finds himself laying claim to Prophet in the most basic way he knows how. And also finds that he doesn’t mind it in the least when Prophet returns the favor.

This novelette is set between book 3 and book 4 in the Hell or High Water series.

Blurb

Nights in the roaring city remind bright young things that life’s too short to take for granted. Tucked away in Times Square hides the Pantheon: a secret cabaret for wealthy gay men. Pretty young men in elaborate costumes and rouged lips are eager to please, and the champagne flows all night long. It’s a world of frivolity, fantasy, and debauchery. As Eros, the most sought after performer at the Pantheon, Julius uses his beauty and charm on enthusiastic patrons, but growing weary of superficial love, he longs to make a better life for himself.
Five years after being declared mentally unfit after surviving the trenches of No Man’s Land, Edward Joseph Clarence Junior pieced his shattered life back together. Now he’s ready to take on the family empire. To celebrate his thirtieth birthday, Edward’s cousin takes him to the most posh nightclub in town, the Pantheon. Falling under the sway of Eros, Edward and Julius find a love they’ve never imagined and the chance for a future they had only dared to dream about. Excerpt

“There you are. I’ve been looking for you two for—” Eros stopped in his tracks and stared at Edward. “You’re here. Again.”
Edward stood and took Eros’s hand, giving it a kiss. “I thought maybe after the second or third night you would have believed me.” The young man looked absolutely stunning as always, the gold cloth wrapped low on his slim hips working a now familiar magic.
Eros wasted no time in removing his hand from Edward’s grasp. “What reason do I have to believe someone who broke into my dressing room and then lied to me about who he was?”
Well, this was certainly news to him. “I said I was an executive for Clarence and Company Department Stores, which I am.”
Eros leaned toward him, his voice lowered. “You seemed to have conveniently left out the tiny detail concerning you also being heir to the Clarence and Company multimillion dollar fortune.”
“Does it matter?” It wasn’t as though Edward wished to go about advertising his wealth, but he wouldn’t have thought Eros had any reason to be discreet about it.
“Does it—?” Eros shook his head and let out a humorless laugh. “I don’t have time for this.”
Perhaps it was time for Edward to get to the heart of the matter and the reason why Eros was doing his best to avoid Edward to the point of being brazen with him when every chorus boy, cupid, and Ancient Greek deity seemed to be in a constant state of frenzy each night in the hopes of roping themselves a wealthy patron.
“Have I done something to offend you?” Edward took hold of Eros’s hand again, refusing to let it go. After the second tug, Eros let out a sigh and left his hand in Edward’s grip. Eros was absolutely enchanting, even when he was irritated.
“No, nothing. I apologize.”
Then it struck him. How could he not have seen it? He’d been looking at this all wrong. The thought had Edward smiling from ear to ear. “It’s not me you’re upset with, is it? You’re upset with yourself.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Eros scoffed. “I happen to be quite fond of myself.”
“You were hoping I’d be here.”
Eros tugged at his hand again. “Well, aren’t we sure of ourselves. For Pete’s sake, would you let go of my hand?”
“You’ve been curious about me since we met. Only now you know the extent of my wealth, you feel threatened. You believe I’ll be no better than the others, wanting nothing more from you than what I pay for, and it’s disappointed you.”
Eros narrowed his eyes at him, at which point Edward promptly let go of his hand. For a love God, Eros certainly had one hell of a murderous glare. Edward was pushing his luck, but he went with his gut feeling.
“Edward, if I felt threatened by a man’s wealth, I would hardly be in this line of work. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. I feel empowered.”
Eros closed the distance between them and ran his hands slowly up Edward’s chest, over his shoulders, and down his back, smiling triumphantly when Edward gave a start at the feel of Eros’s fingers digging into his backside.
“You see, you may have wealth, but I have the power to take it away.”
Eros gave a low, sultry moan before running his tongue over his bottom lip. Pressing himself against Edward, one hand discreetly moved around the front to grip Edward through his trousers. Edward shut his eyes, willing himself to breathe.
“I can feel how hard you’re getting, Edward. Don’t play games with me, or I will make you wish you never set foot in here. Do you think I haven’t come across men like you before?”
His hand slowly started to stroke Edward through his trousers.
“Jesus,” Edward breathed, his hands going to Eros’s shoulders. He had to put a stop to this madness. It was clear Eros was willing to take this as far as he needed to in order to get his point across, and Edward was foolish enough to stand here and let him.
“Honey-sweet words mean little to me, Edward. Do you know how many men have offered to whisk me away from my filthy, devious life? Put me up in some Fifth Avenue penthouse, pay me an allowance, and give me anything I wish for? Do you want to make me your personal whore?”
Edward gently pushed Eros away, drawing a look of surprise from him. “Enough. I neither believe so little of you nor of myself. I won’t have my character insulted. If you have the power to take my wealth as you say you do, why didn’t you take it? You saw how eager I was, yet you continually push me away.”
“You turned him away?” Pothos asked, gaping at Eros.
“Of course not.” Eros lifted his chin defiantly and took a step back. “He stated he would make an arrangement with Aphrodite, and I didn’t object.”
“Only after I refused to leave,” Edward reminded him. “You had ample opportunity to take what you wanted from me, yet all you wanted was for me to leave. Why? What are you afraid of?”
Eros rolled his eyes. “Being bored to death. Honestly, why aren’t you doing Vaudeville with your act? I choose my clients, Edward, and I didn’t choose you. Your bruised ego will simply have to get over it. Now if you will excuse me.”
“Why haven’t you told anyone else who I am? Do you refuse to share me, or are you protecting me?” Edward held back a smile when Eros spun around and marched back to poke him in the chest.
“You seem to have developed this ridiculous notion I care about what you do, Edward. I haven’t spoken of it to anyone as it’s not my place to do so. I pride myself on my discretion and integrity. However, if you wish to announce your wealth to the whole damned club, be my guest! And you’re right; you aren’t like the others, because no one is as infuriating as you are!”
Eros threw his arms up in frustration and stormed off.
“Did I mention you look stunning when you’re angry?” Edward called after him.
Eros grabbed a champagne glass off a passing waiter’s tray and hurled it at Edward. “Go fly a kite!”
With a laugh, Edward managed to jump out of the way in the nick of time, the glass shattering on the floor where he’d been standing. By the time he looked up, Eros was nowhere in sight.
“I think he likes me.”

My god, when will it end? How long was this damn song? He snuck a peek at the rest of the audience, a good deal of whom were swaying and gazing dreamily at Dex. How the hell did the guy do that? Okay, so maybe he could sing, and he did know how to move. Damn, but he knew how to move. Dex was dressed in his usual black and white Chucks, a pair of scruffy jeans, a gray T-shirt with aviators hanging off the chain from his dog tags, and a black leather jacket. Damn, okay, the guy was fucking sexy. His dirty blond hair was ruffled, his jaw stubbly, he had a smile that was slightly crooked and dopey, and an infectious laugh. He could be as perceptive and sweet as he was frustrating and over the top.
“Hey, Sloane.”
Sloane snapped himself out of it, his gaze shifting warily to Ash. “What?”
“Your gay is showing.”
“Screw you.” He snatched Ash’s beer. “Just for that, this is mine now.” Stupid Ash. Maybe Sloane was spending too much time with Dex and his brother; he was starting to sound like Cael. Ash leaned over, though for what purpose, Sloane had no idea, considering he didn’t bother lowering his voice.
“Admit it, you’d hit that.”
“That’s a stupid question,” Letty pitched in with a snort. “Who wouldn’t hit that?”
Rosa perked up, turning to her friend. “Letty. Fuck, marry, kill.”
This night just got better and better. Onstage, Dex was singing away, playing to the crowd, and now his team was going to start playing the worst game ever. Maybe Sloane could slip away, pretend he was going to the bathroom, and run. He considered it, until Letty offered her choices.
“Too easy. Fuck Sloane, marry Dex, kill Ash,” Letty said.
Sloane’s embarrassment was superseded by Ash’s expression of disbelief. “Wow. Thanks, partner.”
Letty shrugged. “Rosa?”
Rosa took a sip of her beer, considering her choices carefully. “If I was into cock? I’d totally fuck Dex, marry Hobbs, and kill Ash.”
“Seriously?” Ash threw his hands up, and Sloane tried not to laugh. The girls didn’t bother. Poor Hobbs went red in the face to the tips of his ears, and Rosa gave him a wink. For a moment, Sloane thought Hobbs was going to run. Like hell he was. Not without taking Sloane with him.
“Calvin?” Letty asked.
Their blond friend toyed with his beer coaster. “Um….”
Letty gave him a playful slap in the arm. “Come on, Cal, it’s only a game. Besides, you and Hobbs act like an old married couple anyway.”
Calvin scratched his head, looking embarrassed. “Okay, uh, I guess fuck Dex, marry Hobbs, and kill Ash.”
“I hate all of you,” Ash grunted, his beefy arms folded over his chest as he leaned back in his chair. Letty ignored him and moved on.
“Hobbs?”
Hobbs whispered in Calvin’s ear, and Calvin’s face went as red as his partner’s. “Um, same for Hobbs. Fuck Dex, marry me, kill Ash.”
“You too, bro?” Ash shook his head at Hobbs who gave him an apologetic smile and a shrug of his big shoulders. He shifted his chair, so he could hide behind Calvin, but unless Calvin suddenly gained an extra foot and a half in height, that wasn’t going to work. Seeming to realize that, Hobbs let his chin rest on the top of Calvin’s head with a sigh. Calvin was so accustomed to it, he took a sip of his beer as if he didn’t have a tiger Therian twice his size using him for a prop.
When Letty turned to Sloane, he shook his head. “No way. I’m not touching this.”
“Come on, don’t be a wuss. Say it. You’d totally fuck Dex.”
Already have. In the kitchen, bedroom, living room, bathroom, car, work… “Not touching this.”
With a pout, she moved on. “Fine, Ash?”
Ash scoffed. “I wouldn’t fuck or marry any of you, but I’d have the time of my life killing your asses. All of you. Assholes.”
Beside him, Cael huffed, giving Ash’s bicep a prod. “Hey, what did I do?”
“Not you. Cael’s the only one who gets to survive. The rest of you can kiss my ass.”
“Cael?” Rosa wriggled her brows. “Come on, gatito. Who makes you purr?”
Cael shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his whole face going pink. “I don’t know that I want to—”
“Come on,” Rosa teased.
“Leave him alone.” Ash threw an arm protectively around Cael’s shoulders. “He doesn’t want to play your stupid game.”
“Touchy. Fine, who do you think Dex would choose?”
Ash got that look in his eyes and Sloane groaned. He fortified himself by downing half his beer in one gulp. Dex was on his third song. Something about being wanted dead or alive. The part about being a cowboy had Sloane picturing Dex in nothing but torn jeans and a cowboy hat. He didn’t know what was worse, what was happening on stage or at their table. His choices were watching Dex and possibly getting an erection, or listening to his team argue over who they’d imaginary fuck, all of which led back to Dex. He was far too sober for any of this.
“Easy,” Ash said, far too happy for his own good. “He’d clearly kill me, and he’s already Sloane’s wife, so there you go. Two for one right there.”
Sloane finished the rest of his beer and pinned Ash with a glare. “And you wonder why everyone wants to kill you.”
Ash shrugged. “What? It’s the truth. You want proof?”
Dex finished singing and the crowd erupted into cheers. When he got to their table, he pointed to Sloane’s empty beer bottle. “Want me to get you another one?”
“While you’re at it,” Ash said sweetly, “why don’t you fetch him a snack and when you’re done, bend over. Hubby’s had a long day and needs to unwind.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I bet a ‘bite me’ is in order.” Dex snatched up Sloane’s empty bottle and stormed off. Sloane shook his head at Ash in disbelief.
“Why do you have to be such an asshole?”
“Aw, isn’t that sweet? Defending his honor. Want me to tell him? It might get you a blow job at the very least.”
Dex came back, handed Sloane a beer, and took a seat next to him. “So what’s going on? I take it Ash’s pleasantness stems from something besides life in general.”
Rosa chuckled, her gaze checking out the waitress in the tight black jeans. “He’s pissed because everyone wants to kill him.”
“How is that different from any other day?” Dex asked, following Rosa’s line of sight before arching an eyebrow at her. She gave him a guilty smile and answered his question.
“We were playing fuck, marry, kill. It was pretty unanimous we would fuck you and kill Ash.”
Dex put a hand to his heart. “Aw, you guys. That’s so sweet. I’m honored you’d all choose me as the one to bang.”
“So, how about you, Dex?” Rosa asked, leaning in keenly, followed by Letty. Everyone’s attention was on Dex, and Sloane told himself if there was ever a time to run, now would be it. He looked over his shoulder and waved a hand to get Bradley’s attention. Soon as he had it, he made the universal sign for “shot” then held up three fingers. Bradley laughed, and with a nod, walked off to make him his order. While he waited for his shots, Sloane took a swig of his beer.
“Easy,” Dex said. “I’d fuck Sloane.”
Sloane nearly choked on his beer. He snatched up a napkin to wipe the dribble from his chin. Smooth. That wasn’t obvious at all.
“Don’t worry, I’d be gentle,” Dex purred, patting Sloane on the back and oblivious to Sloane’s glare.
“As for marry. I’d marry Ash.”
Sloane and Ash sounded off like a couple of echoes. “What?”
“Explain,” Rosa demanded.
“See, you all should have put more thought into your answers. I’d marry Ash, make him fall in love with me, convince him to take out a million dollar life insurance policy then I’d kill him. Bam! I’m rich and free to keep banging Sloane.” The table burst into laughter and Dex wriggled his brows at Sloane. Dex leaned over to take his hand. “Will you wait for me, darling? We can start new lives down in Rio de Janeiro. I’ll become a card shark, and you can be my sexy cabana boy.”
Sloane couldn’t help his laugh. “You’re such an ass.”
“An ass with a million dollars. It’ll be painful, but I’m willing to do this. For us.” Dex gave him a wink, and Sloane felt him squeeze his fingers before releasing them. For a split second, Sloane wished he hadn’t let go. Dex took a deep breath, straightened, and met Ash’s gaze.
“Ash, you’re looking… less murderous today.”
“Fuck you.”
“See that,” Dex said, slapping a hand against the table in victory. “I’ve already got him wanting to fuck me. We’re half way there. Rio de Janeiro, here I come.”

Author Interview & Giveaway: Kate Pavelle for Breakfall (Fall Trilogy 1)

Hi Everyone,

Please help me welcome author Kate Pavelle. Kate has granted me an interview to discuss her new release, Breakfall. The subject matter in this book deals with non-con and I wanted to help Kate share why she wrote this story and why it is personal to her. The book shows a lot of strength on the part of the MC and Kate, and I hope you'll find it inspiring.

Kate is also giving away copies of her books for her blog tour. You'll find the Rafflecopter giveaway below.

Author Interview

Welcome, Kate. I'm so glad to have you here on Attention Is Arbitrary. Please tell us a bit about yourself. Surprise us.

Kate: I fired my first submachine gun in 6th grade, in our Civil Defense class in communist Czechoslovakia. My father blew the windows out of the house with a stun grenade, and as a chemist, he caused a number of “accidents” in his basement lab once we immigrated to the US.

AisA: That is a surprise. What about your writing career, how long have you been writing professionally? Do you focus on M/M primarily or do you delve into other genres?

Kate: My writing evolved from my translation work, and my first paid-for article was to the Black Belt Magazine many years ago. After practicing on fan fiction for a few years, my first two m/m romance books came out in 2013. Nowadays, I love to write crime and thriller, and I have a series of “family” stories and novellas in the works. They talk about my family and the way I grew up. Romance, both gay and straight, is my relaxation reading and writing, because it all has a happy ending.

AisA: Your latest book, Breakfall, has a strong central theme that revolves around martial arts, primarily Japanese Karate and Aikido with elements of jujitsu and sword techniques interspersed. It is apparent that your knowledge on the subject is extensive. Do you have experience in the field?

Kate: Martial arts are my mental health coping mechanism. When I was in high school and didn’t speak English, I got bullied. I ended up taking aikido for self-defense, and I found a sense of belonging at that dojo. In college, starting an aikido club was the first thing I did. I didn’t do any other sports, other than a brief fling with ballet and rugby. Even though I’ve never earned a black belt in aikido, I have been granted 4th dan in Shorin Ryu karate. That’s where I do my kobudo – that’s Okinawan weapons –come from. Sensei John Hamilton has infinite patience with me, and I returned to his sword class this year after a 20-year hiatus. He expects us black belts to go out there and explore other arts and gain perspective on what we are doing with him. That’s essential. It doesn’t dilute the “purity” of the style - it rounds us as martial artists.

AisA: I agree, I think a multi-discipline approach is essential. The other prominent theme in this book is sexual assault. That is a very sensitive subject matter. Why did you decide to tackle it? Did you have any hesitations about exploring such a heavy subject in your novel?

Kate: Well. It was time to write it, because I’ve walked a mile in Sean’s moccasins back in college. Back then, I thought I was pretty tough. I was teaching my own aikido class and people looked up to me and called me “sensei.” However, being attacked while in bed by a larger and

Synopsis: Fall Trilogy: Book One

Sexual assault doesn't discriminate. Aikido instructor Sean Gallaway learns that when he falls prey to a violent stalker. Asbjorn Lund, a karate sensei on campus and a Navy vet, yearns to teach Sean how to survive. How to overcome. How to recover. Sean feels hunted and alone as the stalker escalates, testing his boundaries. With the entire dojo at his back, Sean resolves to play bait. He will catch the predator stalking him and reclaim his sense of self if it's the last thing he does. Yet Sean's hunger for justice clashes with Asbjorn's protective streak, and their budding romance might not survive their war of wills.

stronger perp is not what aikido covers. I lost the battle and won the war when it came to playing bait and sending the guy to jail, but I had to deal with both PTSD and with the rejection by my aikido instructors while my own students acted as my body guards. My two “sensei” didn’t know what to do with me. I felt like a total failure. This led me to explore other martial arts. In ju-jitsu, when I had a flashback during practice, the black belts wormed the story out of me and took me aside for special training. Some of them were vets, and they taught me all sorts of nasty moves to pull from a prone position. My road to recovery led from dojo to dojo, collecting techniques for “next time.”

Time, exposure to triggers, and competence heals. So does love and knowing that I left the world a better place. I’ve been getting fan mail from readers who have been in a similar situation. They thanked me for helping them deal with their own aftershocks, and that’s especially rewarding. I can’t teach them how to crush a trachea or gouge an eyeball, but if they feel less alone, I’ve done my job.

AisA: Not a question, here, but I just wanted to mention that I think an important aspect of Sean’s story is watching his progress throughout this story. He truly is dealing with PTSD, as would anyone in his situation.

Kate: Recovery is part of victory. I had help – author Linda Fairstein, a crime fiction writer, used to be a sex crimes prosecutor in Manhattan. She pioneered many victim protection practices we now take for granted. She’s distant family, but she was happy to talk to me and tell me what to expect in terms of recovery. I also underwent “rapid eye movement therapy.” With vets coming back with PTSD, this technique has become more mainstream for civilians, too. It’s fast, doesn’t require extensive talking and dredging up the details – it just helps the left and the right half of the brain compare notes and integrate highly alarming information. Even though I’m still aware of my surroundings, I was able to leave that sense of hyper-vigilance behind.

AisA: One of your main characters, Sean, seems to be rather innocent or perhaps a bit naïve while the other MC, Asbjorn is possibly too worldly. How did you come up with these two?

Kate: I was naïve back then, too. I was determined that nothing was going to change – yet everything did. I refused to leave, move, or give ground in any way. Asbjorn is a necessary contrast to this fresh, no-holds-barred attitude. Asbjorn might have travelled a lot, and knows a bit more about conflict, but there are chinks in his armor, too. Stay tuned for the sequel!

AisA: Another aspect of the book shows, what I am guessing is, a personal enjoyment of physics and other sciences. Do you have background in these subjects or is this just the light stuff that you play with in your spare time?

Kate: I come from a long line of mad scientists. My dad is a chemist and an inventor and I worked for his company for many years. There was a time I worked in a government research laboratory. The work was fascinating, the team was great, and I’m drawing on all that for Sean in Book 3, “Landfall.”

AisA: Getting back to the dojo, please tell us about the community feel that you’ve created here. There is a very tight knit group of diverse martial arts disciplines that pull together to help Sean. Is this just fiction or does that sense of comradery/brotherhood really exist?

Kate: The camaraderie is real, but the facilities are a lot better than in real life. Also, in real life, we don’t bloody one another like hormonal idiots. At the dojo, when we bow to one another, we give each other permission to violate social norms, get inside each other’s personal space, hit one another. Occasional injuries are rare, but they do happen. The dojo is a place of great trust. I’ve met people I’d trust with my life outside the dojo as well, and I feel privileged to know them.

AisA: Breakfall is part of a trilogy. Do the other books focus on new characters or continue on with Sean and Asbjorn?

Kate: “Breakfall” is Sean’s book. It shows the way he handles a difficult situation. The cliff-hanger portrays what used to be my greatest fear – and in “Swordfall,” we’ll watch Asbjorn deal with his own demons. “Landfall” is a book where, after 2 years of being permanently together, the men overcome obstacles and find a place of harmony.

AisA: When can we look for book 2 in the series?

Kate: I don’t have a release date yet, but “Swordfall” is in production already. My best guess is right before Christmas, or sometime in January.

AisA: Do you have other projects in the pipeline, or other subjects that you plan to tackle like you have here in Breakfall?

Kate: I sure do! My m/m fiction is released with Dreamspinner Press, and “Broken Gait” (sequel to “Wild Horses”) is coming out in September. I love working with their team! Other genres, and the m/m DPS didn’t want, are released with Mugen Press. I’m doing the last edits of “Cancelled Czech Files,” a story that documents how and why we defected, being a homeless refugee, and adapting to the amazing and often confusing life in America. There are some thrillers coming up, too, but those are purely fictional and not much romance is involved.

AisA: You do have a lot going on, very impressive. Well now, we’ve come to the Lightning Round. (No points awarded)

AisA: Facebook or Twitter?

Kate: Twitter. I love my FB friends, but I totally lack self-control and lose track of time!

AisA: Slippers or Boots?

Kate: Boots, or Vibram Five Fingers.

AisA: Opera or Grunge?

Kate: Neither. Comfort is key, but I still like my bling. A piece of jewelry, a good knife in my pocket… you know, just the basics.

AisA: Kate, thank you for sharing your time with us. You've really opened my eyes and given me some great insight. It's been a pleasure learning about you, your writing and your life.

Kate: Thank you for having me! This was a lot of fun.

Review:
  • Dex is more Dex.
  • Ash is more Ash.
  • Sloane is just fucked up.
  • Oh, and Cash!
Charlie Cochet is a trickster! She's lured me into this world with gifts of humor and charming characters, and then she's waylaid me with unexpected anguish. In other words, I love it!

THE CHARACTERS
Sloane could see Dex going into "detective mode" every time he opened a file. It made him once again question whether Dex would be happier in Recon.
Sloane Brodie - As Team Leader, Sloane has to keep everyone safe, but ghosts from his past test his strength and resolve. Sloane broken is crushing.
Wherever his team went, Dex seemed to pick up a fan following. Something about the guy fascinated Humans and Therians alike. Sloane was still trying to work out what it was. Especially since the guy was...well, kinda weird. Then again, crazy had a way of attracting crazy.
Dexter J. Daley (Dex) - No one can push Sloane's buttons like Dex. Even when he's done something right, he's causing friction. Dex in action is thrilling though.

For all the THIRDS' rules on fraternizing, the place was incestuous.
Special Mention - Cael & Ash, Calvin & Hobbs. Or - Cash and Cobbs - respectively.

THE STORY

As the chase for bad-guy Issac continues, Dex makes a hero maneuver against orders that really pisses Sloane off. But why? It was the right thing to do. Sloane decides to be hard headed, Dex decides to keep his head down, and the rest of the world explodes around them.

The Blurb:

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

"Karaoke night!"
The  bro-hijinks in this story help to level out the heavier, harder hitting dark parts. I don't think Charlie Cochet can really ever write the "dark" stuff (she's just too kind), but she definitely paints an edgy, seedy picture showing how bad the ugly parts of society can be.

I'm impressed with the balance and contrast achieved here. If you look you'll see that Cochet has created a world parallel to ours in which bigots are Therian (shifter) haters and it brings into high-def just how ugly that sort of hatred really is.

THE WRITING

I knew going into this series that it was supposed to have humor, but I wasn't really sure that Charlie Cochet could pull it off to the level that was hyped. My apologies to Charlie; she has certainly surprised me. Why did I have any doubts? I've always found a certain delight in reading her works. She always brings wonder, excitement and brightness. But this time, she has slammed me with her humorous wit.

In my (rushed) review of book 1, here, I mentioned the monumental world building that was done to give this series a huge presence. In book 2 I think that detail was given over to the development of the characters, Sloane in particular. Yippee for me, 'cus I'm a Sloane girl. The focus has not really been on the shifting, but rather on personalities and struggles and intriguing characteristics.

I think you'll find you'll be hooked by the humor, but will want to stay for the characters' charms. I know I will.
