Luca’s heart ached as he watched Vin withdraw into himself after they left the lawyers’ offices. He claimed to be fine, and just needed time to process everything, but the smile didn't reach his eyes anymore. Luca gave him space, and would readily open his arms when Vin wanted to snuggle, but wouldn’t keep him there when he wanted to sulk and sketch in his notebook.
He’d done that all day. Drawing. He’d only sought Luca out when he came to bed, the intensity of his touch burning Luca’s skin. They’d had sex like never before, Vin’s raw desire sucking the air out of the room, making Luca feel every move, every touch, every gasp and moan as if there was an electric current between them, zapping and snipping at his every nerve.
Exhausted, they’d fallen asleep in each other’s arms, but when Luca woke in the middle of the night, the bed was empty next to him. Padding barefoot on the cold floor, Luca found Vin curled on the sofa, a blanket over his shoulders, the only light in the room coming from the lights on the Christmas tree. He had his notepad in his lap, a pencil hanging between his fingers, but he was staring at the changing blinking pattern of the lights, his drawing forgotten.
Luca leaned against the door frame.
“Hey,” he said softly, but it still startled Vin. He dropped the pencil when he jumped a little, his blue eyes changing shade every few seconds as the lights kept blinking. “You okay?” Luca had asked that question way too many times.
Vin shook his head wordlessly, bending down to pick up his pencil. Luca walked over to him, sitting down on the couch, and to his surprise Vin offered him to snuggle under the blanket with him. Resting his head on Vin’s shoulder, Luca watched as he kept drawing, the pencil moving swiftly over the paper creating sharp angles and harsh curves that didn’t immediately translate into a particular shape in Luca’s mind. Looking closer, Luca recognized the shape of a tree in the center of the drawing, and lots of small shapes underneath it. The whole picture was very abstract, striking in its originality.
“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” Vin said, his voice quiet and hoarse.
And suddenly his whole drawing made sense.

When I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a very inventive kid.
